@MaximusProteus Ok. The only thing I want to say – it doesn’t metter for fairytale what kind of clothes wearing its heroes, the only target of fairytale to make you believe in it, besides, it was oriented on american audience, not polish, I think americans believed.
@TheDewaere Both movies pictures Poles in a bad light, as the original – book is, but all in all… i liked the movie, just some things made me laught a bit.
Neither Gogol intended to write a historical book, far more fantastic than the books of, let`s say, Sienkiwicz.
The point is that the Cossacs looks like they should and that`s allright, the rest… you see.
So what… so nothing special, just that the Poles were there too with Napoleon.
And I don’t think Yul Brynner is bright side of this movie. I don’t think he knew much more about polish or ukrainian history or culture then usa producers.
@MaximusProteus “the first with Napoleon” – ok, I see, so what? I think that the same things – americans did not intended to make historically accurate movie, it’s classic hollywood film, it’s a fairytale, not historic movie. And what the second film your are talking about? If you are about russian movie of 2009 – many poles doesn’t like it too. They have too much requirements.
@TheDewaere I wrote “the first with Napoleon”, lancers or uhlans or “chevau legers” (horse – light).
That`s a different thing, you talk about a modern interpretation of a classic drama, i was comparing two different movies based on a one novel. The only bright side of this one is Yul Brynner.
The only reason for your anger, that Americans are not interested in your history. This is not surprising – Poland for them as for you, Botswana or Zimbabwe, it is on the border of Ecumene, where live dogheaded people. Actually, what significant things have the Poles done after conquering Moskow to make people of other nationality interested in their history? Nothing.
@MaximusProteus “the others either plundered or spent a night in the city” – it doesn’t metter, licicaviki said poles were the only who conquered Moskow, and I show they weren’t. “The first units to enter Moscow were the Polish lancers” – it’s wrong, you forget about mongolians of Tokhtamysh. “this movie looks like a total crap” – who said americans want make historically accurate film? Have you ever seen Romeo + Juliet with DiCaprio where Shakespeare’s heroes wear modern clothes?
@TheDewaere Poland and Lithuania took over whole Moscovian state, the others either plundered or spent a night in the city… btw. with Napoleon the first units to enter Moscow were the Polish lancers. Wikipedia? LOL
The new Taras Bulba makes this movie looks like a total crap.
@licicaviki, I think you one of the most ignorance guys here. “Only Poles and Lithuanians conquered Moskow in history” – and how about Tokhtamysh and Napoleon? Read the wikipedia first, before teaching others. What about americans, they don’t need learning your history, they would better make money by creating such movies.
@licicaviki Hey, no argument about the prowess of Polish cavalry. As I said in an earlier posting they stopped the very powerful Ottoman Empire at Vienna and changed the history of Europe. As well they later taught Sweden’s Great Captain Gustav Adolph how to use cavalry. Sorry if you misunderstood my comments.
@yamsid Ignorance is no escuse. If You do something You should have knowledge about it. It`s no secred wisdom. All is in the books. But if Your source of knowledge is TV commercials of cornflakes it looks just like disaster.. This movie is Monty Pytoon like “Life of Brian”. … You don`t know nothing but You should because only Poles and Lithuanians conquered Moskow in history.
@licicaviki I’m stunned to find someone on YouTube who knows about the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Don’t know much about it myself, but congratulations.
In the dark days in Hollywood some director say some day “Let`s made movie about Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It`s no problem that We don`t know nothing about it…. just do it”…
@1048luca Sorry for my french – it’s a russian joke meaning sorry for mistakes in my english. Why I’m caring about? Cause we in our countries only shout “americans stupid”, while they get more stronger and powerfull. Let’s have a sight at ourselves.
@1048luca The director of this movie is englishman born in Bristol, Вrynner was half russian, half jewish and early years spent out of America. Are they less stupid then americans? Sorry for my french.
@TheDewaere Nothing (almost) – and I don’t want to know anything. I don’t give a damn about american history. But I’m not the one who is making movies about things I’ve got no idea of.

Yul Brynner is a badass, but he sure did some stupid movies.
July 9th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
@1048luca For example there will be more use if your write about Taras Bul’ba in polish or italian wikipedia – there only a few sentences.
